These prints come from the 1859 Paris edition of Napoléon Ier et la Garde Impériale, with historical text by military archivist Eugène Fieffé and illustrations by Auguste Raffet, one of the 19th century’s leading military artists. The engravings were executed with finesse by Charles Colin. The first plate shows a Sapeur du Génie and a Canonier à Pied engaged in conversation. The sapper, with his distinctive leather apron and metal helmet topped with a plume, represents the engineering troops responsible for fortifications and demolitions. The foot artilleryman wears a similar dark blue uniform and is armed with a musket, showing the essential blend of technical and combat roles within the Imperial Guard. In the second lithograph, the focus shifts to skirmishers in motion. A Tirailleur and Voltigeur advance through brush and uneven terrain, rifles drawn, eyes set on the enemy. These light infantry troops were deployed ahead of the main army to engage in quick, agile attacks. Their uniforms are slightly lighter and more flexible, designed for movement and speed. The vivid blue and white contrasts with red piping and plumes evoke the striking style of the era. The final image features two Fusiliers – one a Chasseur and the other a Grenadier. Shown on the march, they represent the backbone of the line infantry. Their tall shakos, polished white gaiters, and neat shoulder straps typify the formal military discipline instilled throughout Napoleon’s forces. Auguste Raffet (1804–1860) trained under Gros and was praised for his ability to combine realism and romanticism in his depictions of military life. His scenes remain highly sought after by collectors for their historic accuracy and fine composition. Condition Good condition with minor foxing in margins. No tears or folds.
