Frans van everbroeck (antwerp, circa 1628 – london or antwerp 1676/1693) attributed
a stone cartouche surrounded by floral garlands with tulips, roses, daffodils, peonies, and daisies
oil on canvas (101 x 88 cm - framed 126 x 112 cm)
- provenance: christie's, december 13, 2012
- work catalogued in the rkd archive (242220), attributed to frans van everbroeck (attributed to van everbroeck by prof. Fred meijer, after personal inspection on september 12, 2012)
the large painting we are pleased to present depicts a garland composed of four groups of flowers, including tulips, roses, daffodils, peonies, and daisies, stand out against the monochrome black background, arranged around a structure with elegant stone scrolls.
the canvas, dating to the first half of the 17th century, belongs to the series of flower garlands, a genre the artist practiced throughout his career, characterized by the precise rendering of botanical species and the characteristic vivacity and brilliance of the colors.
the work, which for its descriptive precision and style is part of the 17th-century flemish school, is attributed to frans van everbroeck, one of the greatest flemish painters specializing in floral subjects, especially garlands around a central cartouche, as in our painting. He was a pupil in antwerp of the famous still life painter joris van son (antwerp 1623 – antwerp 1667).
the painting is imbued with a sumptuous elegance, created by the movement of the precisely drawn flowers, linked together in a sort of melody that unites them in a baroque style.
the attribution of this still life to van everbroeck is supported by stylistic parallels with many of the artist's documented works.
