At the foot of the Cross are the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The tormentor who whips Jesus on his ascent to Golgotha is portrayed in profile, as is generally the case with evil figures. The representation is intense and exudes profound pathos, yet maintains a certain spiritual detachment typical of the mysticism of the Orthodox Church. The static nature of the crucifixion, expressing the tragedy of an irremediable event, contrasts with the dynamism of Calvary, where human suffering and a sense of defeat are still prominent. John appears broken. But in the serene face of the crucified Christ and in the revealing gesture of the Virgin Mary, pointing with her hand to the Son of God, we already anticipate the exultation of Easter.
