Hammary Louis XV French Provincial Tiered Fruitwood Writing Desk With Finished Back and Original Chair
Mid Century French Provincial desk in the style of Louis XV- by Hammary Furniture Company manufactured during the period of time when North Carolina, USA was a furniture manufacturing leader.
This vintage Hammary writing desk and chair is in good original condition. The desk is 36" wide which allows it to fit into smaller spaces as well as holds enough profile to stand out in a larger room. Another great feature of the desk is that it is ( originally and ongoing ) finished on the back side. This gives the owner more flexibility in placement of the desk. It doesn't necessarily need to be put up against a wall. The desk can be part of a room division and the back can quite literally be the first thing a person sees when entering a room.
The overall depth of the desk is 22". The finish is in good condition as well. There were a few minor touch ups that needed to be done which I completed. The desk has 4 cabriole legs and the matching chair has 2 front cabriole legs and the back 2 legs are normal shape for seating stability.
There are 2 tiers to the top of the desk. In the front part where you can write on, it stands 29 1/2" high from the floor level. The back part which holds the cubbies and the middle open space on level 1 (perfect for a desk organizer). Then the back part, supported by the cubbies on either end stands 39 1/4" high from the floor level. The very top level of the second tier is a great place to put a small lamp, office decor items or stand up calendars. The very top of the 2nd tier measures 36" X 10" ( with 2 inverted scallops taking an inch or so away in 2 places ). The scalloped edging around the 2nd tier and around the whole desk itself is a lovely attribute. The wooden ' skirt' around the bottom of the desk top is also scalloped on the front and 2 sides with carvings that follow the scallops. There is one drawer that slides in and out very well. The drawer pulls and the cubby pulls hardware are solid brass. The cubbies close with a magnetic system -magnet and plate. I am not sure what type of metal was used for the cubby front meshing, but it is in good shape.
More about the chair:
It is in good usable condition.
The wood underneath the seat cushion looks original and there is no sagging. It holds weight very well.
Chair dimensions: 35 1/4 " high in the back.
17" 1/2" wide at the widest
Chair seat sits 18 1/4" high off the floor
Regarding the seat upholstery, my guess is that the upholstery is original as well considering the authentic 1960's look and feel of it. I would describe the upholstery as a muted gold color that has a fine, low repeating nubbiness to it. There were a few areas of the finish on the wooden parts of the chair that needed some touch up, which I completed. The upholstery has no fraying or rips. I steam cleaned the chair cushion.
