A Large Gilt Bronze Makara Finials, Tibet, Late 17th Early/18th Century
In Hindu and Buddhist mythology, the Makara is a legendary sea creature, often depicted as a hybrid beast with features like the head of an elephant, crocodile, or fish, and the body of an aquatic animal, symbolizing water, life, power, and strength. Makaras are commonly seen as guardians of gateways and thresholds in temple architecture, and also as waterspouts.
As a finial it would have originally adorned the top of a roof or temple.
