Item description:
A rare and highly distinctive large majolica ceramic sculpture with a rich glaze, depicting a wild boar cub, created by the important Sardinian artist and ceramist Emilia Palomba, who trained in Rome, in the second half of the 20th century. Signed under the base with her classic mark consisting of her initials, the letters "EP," in this case the acronym did not come out very well, but it is certainly easily recognizable to those familiar with Emilia Palomba's mark. In addition, our sculpture, called "wild boar cub," was also published in the artist's official catalog. It is a large and heavy object, weighing over 3 kg. The artistic level of the work, which is entirely hand-modeled, is very high. Each lamella that makes up the upper part of the boar's fur is handmade using gouges, palettes, and other tools for working with ceramics, a very long and complex process that requires great commitment to execute.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our internet research shows that Emilia Palomba has achieved significant auction results, especially in the lighting category, where two pairs of lamps were estimated at €3,000-€3,500 per pair at the auction "L'Art de vivre en mer dans le cadre de la Monaco Classic Week" on 12/09/2015 at the "Hôtel de Ventes de Monte-Carlo" in Monte Carlo, Monaco, specifically lot 99, entitled "Lampes (c.2000)" and lot 100 entitled "Lampes, imitation d'un coquillage (c.2000)". We also found our own sculpture, in a polychrome version, offered on the Internet for €930, reduced from the initial price of €1,600. Finally, also on the Internet, we found a ceramic mirror, also quite small, offered at €1,400, a single golden ceramic lamp offered at over €3,900, and another shell-shaped lamp offered at over €2,800, all to give a general idea of the importance of Emila Palomba's works and a more specific idea of the value of objects similar to ours.
(By entering the details of the items we have mentioned into Google, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we used, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or name of the sales website, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items mentioned).
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Emilia Palomba was born in Cagliari in the mid-1930s. After the war, she attended the Academy of Art in Rome and in 1958 opened a workshop for the production of artistic ceramics in Cagliari. Her creations, inspired by ancient traditional Sardinian textile arts, evolved in the late 1970s into a more mature production of furnishing accessories, which she presented at various craft exhibitions, enjoying increasing success. In the last photo, we have added further historical information about the artist for those who wish to learn more, with the same mark found under our sculpture.
