Bring home a stunning piece of 19th-century craftsmanship with this French antique walnut armoire, circa 1850.
This grand wardrobe features the classic “chapeau de gendarme” crown – a sweeping double-curve cornice reminiscent of a gentleman’s bicorn hat – hallmark of the Louis XV Revival style.
Crafted of solid walnut with a warm, rich original patina, the armoire features twin paneled doors and a gracefully scalloped apron base, all resting on small bracket feet. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior (~7 feet tall inside) with a hanging rod and removable shelves, offering versatile storage for clothing, linens, or display. Two hand-dovetailed drawers at the bottom, with original turned wood knobs, provide additional hidden storage and attest to the piece’s hand-built quality. This armoire’s quality is evident in its construction: hand-cut dovetail joinery, pegged mortise-and-tenon frame, and heavy solid boards speak to Old World craftsmanship. The walnut wood has aged beautifully over ~170 years, now exhibiting a glowing original finish that has been well-maintained. Ornamental yet elegant, the armoire is adorned with a carved center medallion on the crown and subtle molded trim; it’s a refined provincial interpretation of Rococo design, rather than overly ornate, making it easy to blend with both traditional and eclectic interiors.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with typical character marks. Doors swing smoothly. Interior shelves are later additions for convenience and can be removed to use the full hanging space if desired. The exterior finish is in beautiful shape for its age, with minor wear commensurate with age – faint scratches and small dings that do not detract from its presence. No cracks or structural issues; this piece is sturdy and functional. (The armoire can be disassembled into several pieces for transport, a common feature of antique French armoires – we can provide guidance on this if needed.)
Dimensions: 93"x17"x48". (Plenty of storage: the interior depth accommodates standard hangers, and the height is great for long garments or bulky bedding.)
Why You’ll Love It: This heirloom armoire brings instant French chateau elegance to any space. Use it as a wardrobe, a linen closet, a living room statement cabinet, or even an office bookcase – it’s as practical as it is beautiful. Pieces like this are increasingly sought-after for their sustainable craftsmanship and timeless style.
