A French Ormolu Group of Two Bacchantes and a Satyr
The sculpture depicts a scene of Bacchic revelry, featuring two draped female figures, known as Bacchantes or Maenads, followers of Bacchus (the Roman god of wine), and a child satyr. It is inspired by the work of the renowned French sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738-1814). Clodion's "Bacchanal" groups are celebrated for their intricate detail, energetic composition, and their embodiment of the epicurean spirit through elements like music (tambourines) and food (grapes).
