Item description:
wonderful majolica earthenware vase, entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel, finished with acid-treated glaze and decorations in classic vietri style, featuring a shepherd, goats, a large tree, and a small landscape with houses and a small tree. Dating back to the first half of the 20th century, made in vietri by the famous procida brothers' factory, signed "procida vietri" under the base. The ceramic body of the vase is quite thick and substantial, which is why the vase is rather heavy for its size. Beautiful patina, we are talking about a vase made around 1930.
useful information for evaluating the object:
a quick search on the web shows that wall plates, vases, and other procida ceramics with the same glaze finish and similar dimensions are offered for sale at prices ranging from a minimum of €250 to over €600.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
vincenzo procida, brother of ceramists salvatore and giosuè, was born in vietri in 1909. He began working at a very young age at the "vetreria meridionale ricciardi" glassworks and later became involved in ceramics as an apprentice at the "avallone" factory. From 1927, he worked as an employee at the vietri ceramics factory "i.c.s." owned by max melamerson. From 1936 to 1939, he moved to florence to work with his colleague guido gambone at i.c.s. At the florentine factory cantagalli, which had entered into a partnership agreement with melamerson during those years. In 1940, he returned to work in vietri sul mare, and at the end of the war, he participated with guido gambone and andrea d'arienzo in the founding of the ceramic factory "la faenzarella." in 1950, together with his brothers salvatore and giosuè, he opened the "procida" ceramics factory in vietri marina and for about ten years divided his time between the family factory and his collaboration with gambone at "faenzarella." in 1959, he moved to florence where he collaborated with the newly founded "la tirrena" factory, established by guido gambone and andrea d'arienzo. At the end of 1969, following the death of his brother salvatore, he returned to work with giosuè at the procida factory in vietri sul mare. Vincenzo procida, a traditional ceramist, became famous for his production of small terracotta nativity scenes animated by tiny figures. Later, encouraged by the neapolitan architect geppino cilento, vincenzo procida began producing special nativity scenes, unique pieces that are now highly sought after, consisting of large figures of mary and joseph (over thirty centimeters tall) and a series of shepherds, angels, and sometimes tiny houses and landscapes clinging to the cloaks of the two protagonists. A highly skilled potter, but also a complete ceramist with remarkable artistic ability, vincenzo procida died in vietri in 1984.
