Offered for your consideration is a rare 19th century antique French glazed terracotta cake mold in the shape of a star. T'his mold was made in the Alsace region of France. This rustic mold was sculpted by hand out of thick pottery and has a nice terracotta/orange glaze that has acquired a lovely patina over the years. These molds were often used to bake a Kugelhopf, Savarin, or Brioche cake. The natural clay was known for excellent heat distribution, ensuring even baking. These molds are often found in a round design - finding one with a star shape is rare.
The mold shows wear commensurate with age and use and in is overall good antique condition. There are small missing areas of glaze, rubs, and some slight discoloration to the front, but there are no chips or cracks seen. The back shows aged related discoloration. There is a wire hanger that has been attached (not recently) and it has caused a bit of the glaze to flake where it touches the mold. Please see all of the photos as they are an important part of the description.
The cake mold measures approximately 9.5" tall by 10 3/4" wide by 3" deep.
This is a rare find and would make a lovely addition to any rustic French pottery collection. It would also look great in a grouping of other rustic treasures on a wall.
