A Japanese Shusai-yaki studio pottery bowl, wheel-thrown and finished in a translucent white feldspathic glaze brushed with iron-oxide slip. The decoration, rendered in loose calligraphic strokes, celebrates the wabi-sabi ideal of imperfection and spontaneity. The warm earthen body reveals its natural iron speckling along the trimmed foot ring, contrasting with the soft, matte-to-gloss transitions of the glaze.
This form reflects the Mingei revival movement—an aesthetic philosophy championing the beauty of the handmade and the spiritual dignity of everyday objects. Produced in postwar Japan, the bowl bridges folk tradition and modern studio sensibility, resonating with the work of Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, and other masters who elevated utilitarian forms to expressions of art.
The included “Earth & Fire” documentation confirms its participation in a mid-century program that introduced Japanese studio potters to Western collectors. Elegant in restraint and rich in material authenticity, this vessel embodies the timeless simplicity and quiet poetry of Japanese craft.
