After the … Read more William Daniell (1769–1837) was an English landscape and marine painter and printmaker, notable for his work in aquatint. After the death of his father when he was 10, he was sent to his uncle, landscape painter Thomas Daniell. Apprenticed to his uncle and at the age of 15, William accompanied him on a journey through India for almost 10 years, eventually becoming his uncle's partner and publishing some selected paintings from their journey through India as aquatints. That work, "Journey to India" was published in 6 parts and comprised 150 pictures. It became a great success. This aquatint is is an illustration from a subsequent book: Volume 1 of "The History of Java" by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, published in 1817 and detailing the history, society, and culture of the island of Java. Daniell was admitted to the Royal Academy School in 1799. He later became an associate and eventually a full member of the Royal Academy. See less
