A refined 1842 hand-colored lithograph by Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796–1877), titled “J. Steen Consultant Ses Amis”, published by the Société des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and printed by P. Degobert.
This work is Plate 20 in the series Scènes de la Vie des Peintres, which humorously depicted scenes from the lives of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painters. In this image, Jan Steen, known for his chaotic and jovial interior scenes, consults with an animated group of friends—an homage both to his painting style and the raucous spirit of his subjects.
The lithograph bears all original inscriptions including “Lith. de la Société des Beaux-Arts,” “Imprimé par P. Degobert,” and is signed in plate by Madou. Subtle hand-coloring enhances the depth and detail of this fine example of 19th-century lithography.
