Description of the item:
Huge, majestic bronze bust, partially gilded, with marble base. Depicting a young Neapolitan fisherman with a classic fisherman's hat and fishing net over his shoulder, signed "V. Cinque" on the back. Made in full Art Nouveau style, dating from between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. The patina covering the entire sculpture is beautiful. The patinated part in various shades of green was created chemically, while the gilded part seems to have been made with mercury rather than electroplating, as the gold is rather yellow, albeit opaque due to the thick antique patina, but it is not the yellow-orange gilding obtained with electroplating processes. An imposing and very beautiful sculpture, considering that we are talking about 53 centimeters in height and over 11 kg in weight, of the highest artistic level offered at an excellent price.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From our internet research, we found that the four highest auction results achieved by Vincenzo Cinque range from €2,008 to €7,500, plus auction fees of 25-30%. We also found a large pair of busts depicting African subjects, lot number 639 entitled "Masai figures." At the auction "Furniture - Antique Paintings - Silverware - Carpets and Fabrics - Historica" on 11/04/2019 at "Il Ponte Casa D'aste Srl" in Milan, Italy, estimated at €12,500 - €13,500. Then we found another single bust, lot number 1313 entitled "Portrait of an Oriental Woman/Portrait of an Oriental Man" from the "Antique and 19th Century Paintings" auction on 09/06/2022 at "Wannenes" in Genoa, Italy, estimated at €2,600-€3,000. Finally, we found a large sculpture depicting a woman riding a camel, lot number 561 entitled "Chamelier oriental sur sa monture attaqué par un lion" in the auction entitled "Civilisations, Dessins, Tableaux anciens & XIXème Mobilier et Objets d'Art" on 26/09/2020, estimated at €4,000-6,000, from the "Hôtel de Ventes de Monte-Carlo" in Monte Carlo, Monaco. All this to give an idea of the importance of this Neapolitan sculpture. Obviously, these are much more important works than our bust, but even our request is considerably lower than the auction prices found.
