Crafted circa 1880, the oval basin features richly molded rococo cartouches on each side, framing hand-painted chinoiserie-style scenes of exotic birds nestled among flowering branches. The colorful palette, highlighting rose, yellow, green, and lilac tones, is enhanced by raised gilt scrollwork that lends a dimensional, decorative flourish.
The cream-colored body displays subtle craquelure from age, and the piece is fitted with ornate molded side handles and a thick rolled rim. Each side presents a variation of the avian and floral motif, inspired by 18th-century Asian export wares popular in France during the late 19th century. The unmarked underside shows light staining and wear consistent with age.
