Mid-century free-blown glass hummingbird in flight attributed to Alfredo Barbini, unsigned. A striking Murano glass sculpture in light olive and creamy white, this piece features a top layer of clear glass infused with a starcast of gold aventurine dust. The organic form flows with lifelike fluidity—morphing from one angle to the next with elegant motion. At its center, a stylized hummingbird hovers mid-air, its beak gently poised toward an open bloom. The sculpture captures a moment of natural grace, rendered in luminous tones and exquisite craftsmanship. Both a sculpture and a fine art figurine, this work embodies the magic of Murano—alive, radiant, and timeless.
The organic form, stylized motion, and olive-toned glass infused with gold aventurine are hallmarks of Alfredo Barbini’s mid-century avian designs. This free-blown technique and luminous palette are consistent with works produced in his Murano studio during the 1950s–60s. Pieces of this design have appeared in curated collections and reputable online platforms, further supporting the attribution. This design can also be found through other Murano makers such as Salviati, who, according to the Burchfield Penney Art Center at the University at Buffalo, provided financial assistance for Barbini’s own glassworks in 1950 and for whom Barbini produced works.
Provenance:
Affixed to the base is the original paper label reading “Camer Glass New York / Made in Italy.” Camer Glass was a New York importer active during the 1950s–70s, known for sourcing Murano glass from master studios, including that of Alfredo Barbini. Barbini—one of the leading figures in postwar Venetian glass—was renowned for his richly sculpted forms, refined palettes, and masterful use of aventurine.
