Stunning four-door sideboard made in Italy in the 1970s, likely a custom design, a one-of-a-kind piece, and handcrafted.
Solid walnut frame, with perforated black ash detail.
This piece stands out for its rigorous composition, well-calibrated proportions, and quality workmanship, placing it among the finest custom-made pieces of the period.
The frame is made of solid wood and entirely covered in flamed walnut veneer, with a vertical grain and a glossy finish that enhances its depth and warm tone.
The body of the piece rests on a recessed, almost invisible base, which visually lightens its volume, giving the illusion of a suspended top.
This effect is further accentuated by the clean line separating the top from the front, where a perforated element in black-painted ash, with a regular pattern, is set.
This detail, rare in Italian production of the period, serves both an aesthetic and technical function: it introduces a graphic rhythm contrasting with the wooden surface and recalls certain solutions typical of the Arts & Crafts movement, where craftsmanship combines with decorative research even in functional elements. The presence of the grille, the manual treatment of the wood, and the absence of handles or ostentatious mechanisms ideally recall the poetics of the Rivadossi carpentry workshop, although the piece does not appear to be part of their official production, as confirmed by a comparison.
The doors, perfectly aligned and without visual interruptions, open with a groove to reveal a rationally divided interior, designed for everyday use but crafted with the care typical of a unique piece.
For its construction features, quality materials, and formal solutions, this sideboard is considered a remarkable testament to the high-end Italian craftsmanship of the late twentieth century, at a time when the boundaries between architecture, design, and carpentry were becoming increasingly blurred.
The piece is stunning even from behind and can be placed in the center of a room or living room, featuring handcrafted details such as the dowels that join and hold the piece together, a typical detail of the high-quality, screwless craftsmanship of the finest joinery, such as Rivadossi.
