A pair of late 19th-Century Japanese Imari chargers / plates. These lovely early porcelain chargers are hand painted in the traditional colors of red and blue and have stapled repairs.
Staple repair was a common method for mending broken porcelain and ceramics, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, when porcelain was highly valued and expensive. Small holes are carefully drilled on either side of a crack or break in the porcelain, and metal staples, often made of brass or silver, are inserted and bent to hold the pieces together.
