This artwork is believed to be an original 1922 watercolor cityscape of Cairo, signed by the artist 0. Sandez in the bottom left corner, capturing a richly detailed architectural scene in the heart of the Egyptian capital.Rendered in muted earth tones with fine ink outlines, the composition presents a strikingly quiet alleyway flanked by traditional buildings, with a prominent minaret rising in the background-suggestive of Cairo's Islamic architectural heritage.
The artist's careful attention to perspective and urban texture is evident in the rhythmic windows, varied rooflines, and the subtle layering of walls and courtyards. A canal or trench runs through the foreground, adding spatial depth and drawing the viewer's eye inward. Lush trees soften the hard edges of the buildings, and splashes of teal and ochre accent the otherwise dusty palette.
Signed what looks like "O. Sandez" at the lower left and inscribed "Cairo 1922" at the lower right, the work is executed on a traditional watercolor sketch board, as indicated by the original label still present on the back. The painting is in a vintage wooden frame with simple molding and a gold-toned finish, showing minor scuffing and patina appropriate to its age.
This piece is a strong example of early 20th-century Orientalist travel painting-likely completed en plein air or shortly after on-site observation-and provides a rare glimpse into the streetscape of historic Cairo. Ideal for collectors of Orientalist art, architectural watercolors, or historic travel works.
