Item description:
Delightful sculpture in fine white hard-paste porcelain, "Blanc de Chine" glazed, finished in pure gold, depicting a pair of bacchanalian cherubs playing the pipe, signed in green by the famous German manufacturer Hutschenreuther and the artist "K. Tutter" with signature incised in the ceramic paste, dating from the early decades of the 20th century, around 1930.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our internet research has shown that the four highest auction results achieved by Karl Tutter in the "ceramics" category range from over €1,100 to €1,200, while in the "sculptures-volume" category, the four highest auction results range from €800 to €4,200. We also found children, similar in style, dressed in Arab clothing, only 22 centimeters tall, estimated at €1,200-1,500, from Doretheum in Vienna, Austria, auction on 21/03/2016, lot number 48, entitled "Fischhändler (c.1926/30)" and lot number 46 entitled "Weinhändler (c.1926/30)". Finally, on the Internet, a sculpture depicting three greyhounds running is offered at over €2,900, while for a lady on a leopard, the asking price is almost €6,000 from other the Internet sellers. This gives an idea of the importance of this artist. Our cherubs belong to the artist's early works, signed with an incised signature under the base. Similar or even identical pieces can be found at rather low prices, but these are later reissues, and if you look closely, the quality is much lower, as are the glazing and the ceramic mixture. Ours were made by the artist himself.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
In 1814, Carolus Magnus founded Hutschenreuther, the first private porcelain factory of the modern age in Bavaria. Considered one of the most important German manufacturers in the world, it also collaborated with Meissen and other major manufacturers. Karl Tutter (1883 - 1969) was an Austro-German sculptor, painter, and porcelain designer. In 1922, he was employed as a model maker at the Lorenz Hutschenreuther porcelain factory, and was one of its greatest and most important exponents, famous above all for his stylized sculptures in full Art Deco style. The last photos show historical notes on the manufacturer taken from one of our books in French, with some of the many brands used, including ours.
