This finely modeled pair of porcelain guardian lions—commonly referred to as “Foo Dogs”—is rendered in a brilliant turquoise glaze, a hallmark of Chinese decorative ceramics popular during the late Qing Dynasty (circa 1880–1912) and into the early Republic period (1912–1940s), these are likely later 20th century models. The figures are mirror opposites, each seated upright on a plinth base with front paws raised—one atop a brocaded ball and the other in a protective gesture—symbolizing dominion and vigilance. They represent the traditional male and female pairing: the male with the globe, symbolizing worldly power, and the female with a cub or inward-facing paw, denoting nurturing and domestic protection.
The bodies are characterized by prominent musculature, curled tufts along the spine, and stylized manes, all enhanced by the flowing application of the crackle-free high-fired turquoise glaze. The glaze pools with deeper saturation in recesses and around incised details, producing a dynamic surface interplay of light and shadow. Their openwork mouths and expressive, alert faces are animated with black-painted pupils and teeth, offering visual contrast and intensity.
Each figure rests upon a square pierced plinth with stylized architectural openings at the base, typical of export pieces produced for Western markets. The form and glaze reflect a continuation of Kangxi and Qianlong dynasty design traditions revived in export production hubs in southern China, particularly in Jingdezhen and Guangdong province kilns. These turquoise-glazed figures were especially favored in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for their vibrant color and symbolic resonance, often displayed in pairs at entrances or on mantelpieces to ward off evil and attract good fortune.
