Vintage study of Henri Matisse's famous fauvist portrait with his wife as sitter. Signed by Annamarina Norman, a California Monterey Bay artist (American, b. 1959). Pure, unblended primary and secondary paints in painterly style is en pointe representation of Fauvist school. Composition adds balance and a breakthrough by being unburdened by traditional modes and methods of portraiture.

Henri Matisse's iconic portrait of his wife "Madame Matisse" is an excellent example of Fauvism ("Wild Beasts"), a style of painting that flourished in France around the turn of the 20th century. Fauve artists used pure, brilliant colour aggressively applied straight from the paint tubes to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas.

The Fauves painted directly from nature, as the Impressionists had before them, but Fauvist works were invested with a strong expressive reaction to the subjects portrayed.
