Mexican plaster work, known as “yeso” craftsmanship, has deep roots in both Spanish colonial traditions and indigenous Mesoamerican building techniques. This neoclassical design reflects the enduring influence of European architectural styles that were adapted and refined by Mexican artisans beginning in the colonial period. The shell motif holds particular significance in Mexican decorative arts, often representing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and appearing frequently in colonial churches and haciendas throughout Mexico.
The Doric columns with their precise fluting, the perfectly proportioned shell canopy with its radiating ribs, and the elegant stepped base all showcase the high level of training and skill required to produce such work.
