The figures are rendered using metallic pigments that shimmer subtly in changing light — an uncommon and elevated detail rarely seen in surviving examples, enhancing the work’s depth and vibrancy.

Created using a traditional hand-rubbing technique, this artwork was transferred from a temple relief or ceremonial carving onto black fabric, a less common and more refined medium than paper. The result is a richly textured and spiritually resonant composition that evokes the grace and symbolism of Southeast Asian art.

Temple rubbings were once a respected art form used to preserve and share the beauty of sacred bas-reliefs, typically from temples such as Wat Pho or other revered Buddhist sites. This practice has since been banned by the Thai government in order to protect the original marble and stone reliefs — making authentic vintage pieces, particularly in such fine condition, increasingly scarce and desirable among collectors.

The piece was professionally framed in February 1970 by Davis Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and retains its original gallery label on the back. The vintage bamboo-style gold frame complements the artwork’s warmth and adds a mid-century decorative flair.
