Description of the item:
Wonderful majolica plate with a lady in nineteenth-century dress with a parasol and small dog, all in slight relief, entirely hand-modeled, glazed, and finally vitrified, made and signed on the back by the artist Sante Tassinari, with "Tassinari Faenza," dating from around the first half of the 20th century, 1930-1950.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
The artistic influence of the Melandri-Focaccia workshop, where Sante Tassinari trained, is very evident, especially in terms of glazing and luster, while the lady perhaps draws more on the work of Francesco Nonni. Having found no auction results or quotations for this artist's works, we looked for ceramics similar to this plate made by the workshop where the artist trained, namely Melandri and Focaccia, and all the pieces we found were auctioned at very high prices, with estimates ranging from €1,500-2,000 to as much as €4,500-5,500 for the larger plates. Obviously, our plate is not by Melandri, but by one of his students, Sante Tassinari, and even though the artistic level and technique are very similar, the value is certainly lower.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Born in Faenza in 1910, Sante Tassinari joined Pietro Melandri's workshop in 1924, where he worked in the molding department for over twenty years. In 1951, he opened his own workshop, where he created exclusively unique pieces characterized by slender figures or relief decorations obtained by applying liquid clay in a very free manner, which was then treated with rapid strokes of a stick. Among his most significant works are the Via Crucis in the Hospital of Russi, the Madonna preserved in the sacristy of S. Mercuriale in Forlì, and the Annunciation and Deposition in the cemetery of Fontanelice.
