Ancient, beautiful polychrome terracotta from the late 19th century with a matte black wooden spool base, entirely handmade by the renowned austrian goldscheider factory. Signed and numbered on the back, it depicts a bust of anne boleyn, a famous english historical figure from the 16th century. The catalog number on the back of the bust is "271," a very, very low number considering that this factory produced over 9,000 objects from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. This makes it one of the factory's earliest and most valuable pieces, an ancient and important object. In the last photo, we have included the sculpture's catalog number, 271, in the general catalog of goldscheider sculptures.
useful information for appraising the item:
goldscheider terracottas are by far the most important, sought-after, and most highly paid of all those produced in europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Just to give you an idea of the value of the terracotta sculptures made by this manufacturer, we did a quick online search and found that the four highest prices for goldscheider terracottas range from €11,000 to €23,000, plus a 25-30% buyer's premium.
final considerations on the item:
anne boleyn was queen consort of england and ireland from 1533 to 1536, as the second wife of henry viii tudor. Her marriage to henry viii caused considerable political and religious upheaval that gave rise to the anglican schism. In 1536, anne boleyn was accused of treason by henry viii, and on may 19th, anne boleyn was beheaded. The bust is crafted in the art nouveau style, displaying a high level of artistic excellence. Notice the beauty of the pleated shirt with its small ruff, the necklace, the beautiful shrug, clearly made of terracotta cloth, applied entirely by hand to the bust. Finally, the woman's face, truly beautiful and reminiscent of that depicted in various paintings, complete with her classic headdress.
