A rare 18th century opaque twist, short wine glass, dating to c1750.
It has an ogee bowl above a short double series opaque twist stem consisting of a pair of spiral tapes outside a gauze. Sits on a helmet foot.
This is an outstanding glass which has several rare features. Short wine glasses, as their name suggests, have a standard-sized bowl and foot but with a shorter stem than normal, halfway between a wine and a dram glass. Although the form is well documented, it is often overlooked.
Why shorter stemmed wines were made and who used them is a debate for elsewhere, but the combination of bowl, stem and in particular, the foot, is a rare combination indeed.
You will have great difficulty in finding another example of this glass.
