Abstract Expressionist Composition with Stairs in Gouache and Ink on Paper
Bold abstract composition by Pacific Northwest artist Karen Guzak (American, b. 1939). A large, dark blue area fades into a pale peach color, with variations throughout. There are subtle changes in color and texture that add depth. Distributed throughout the piece are various zigzag stairstep shapes, unconnected to any other structures.
Signed and dated "Karen Guzak 1979" in the lower right corner.
Presented in a black frame with a white mat.

Karen Guzak (American, b. 1939) is an artist and printmaker from Cambridge, MA. Prior to the start of her career, Karen Guzak pursued an education at the University of Colorado Boulder, as a Boettcher Scholar, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science. Subsequently, Guzak earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Cornish School of Allied Arts in 1976. As an artist, her paintings and prints have been exhibited in shows at the Foster White Gallery, the Tom Luttrell Gallery, and the Portland Art Museum, among others. Ms. Guzak is additionally represented in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum, the Jundt Museum at Gonzaga University, the Tacoma Art Museum, and with various private art collectors.
Guzak’s career began as a painter and printmaker, but she since has added carpet design, public art, and landscape design to her skillset. The designed the gardens at Angel Arms Works, was on the team that designed the etched glass elevators at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, and created a public art installation at Overlake Transit Center in Redmond, Washington. She also collaborated with her son Chris on a 65-foot-long sculpture at Southern Oregon State College.
Guzak served as Mayor of Snohomish, Washington for seven years, culminating with the Seeds of Hope Award from the RESULTS group. She lives and works with her husband Warner Blake - a notable artist in his own right - in Seattle, Washington.
