ThatKateGirl is pleased to offer this exceptional Early 20th Century (possibly older) Japanese four panel gold byobu or folding screen. This hand painted, gold silk byobu depicts a scenic Spring mountain and river landscape with white cherry blossoms and a recluse and/or farmer crossing a bridge. Note the brightness of the cherry blossoms against the gold and the.simple, yet affecting white dashes on the river to depict a peaceful dawn or dusk, as well as the style of the houses with the tall, steeply pitched, straw roofs. We have not seen any painting style on a byobu quite like this and believe it is from the Edo period., when romanticized scenes of scholars turned mountain recluses were popular. Additionally, the signature characters are old and not in modern use, indicating an older date. The frame is unfinished with decorative gold (possibly gold plated given color and lack of tarnish) cornices. Condition wise, this byobu does show some minor age and wear, including some wear and a patched puncture on the back, a very small puncture on the bottom of the second panel, some discoloration on the top right corner, and some scuffs on the frame. Measures approximately 46.75” wide, 24” tall and .75” thick, x when folded.
An enchanting mountain and river landscape that works with traditional interiors.
