Description of the item:
Small, delightful hard-paste porcelain sculpture, polychrome, entirely decorated by hand and glazed, with a standing kitten and two baskets with flowers applied in relief. Made in the late 19th century by the French manufacturer Vion & Baury, in Art Nouveau style. The object is not signed, as was often the case with small objects, because the manufacturer signed its objects with an anchor-shaped stamp dipped in green ink, but this stamp was of standard size and often, as in our case, was larger than the space available under the sculpture. However, the object was definitely made by Vion & Baury. Online, there are many sculptures that are very similar in terms of the subjects, style, and type of porcelain used, always depicting cats with baskets or vases, attributed to the same manufacturer.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From our internet research, we have found that large biscuit pairs by Vion & Baury are listed at auction for as much as €1,500-€2,000 or offered on various leading art and antiques sales sites, such as the Internet, at very high prices of over €1,400 for a single large biscuit sculpture. We then found a larger sculpture, but very similar to ours in style and subject matter, depicting a pair of cats in a basket and also attributed to the same manufacturer, offered on the Internet by other sellers for €490. Obviously, as our item is smaller than the items mentioned, it has a significantly lower value, even though the artistic quality and materials used are the same.
