Item description:
Wonderful ceramic bowl vase entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel, then glazed and decorated by hand, with bas-relief decorations, partially vitrified and partially finished with acid, signed under the base with the artist's initials "CV" for Vincenzo Corrente, catalog number, place of manufacture, and decorator "Nico," made for the Florentine manufacturer Egisto Fantechi, as evidenced by the presence of the Florentine lily in the main decoration, datable to around 1910.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Through our research, we found an Art Deco vase by Vincenzo Corrente listed by "Boetto Casa d'aste" at €450-550, and another vase, also in Art Deco style, offered on the Internet at €1,500 by other sellers, all to give a general idea of the value of the works of this famous artist. It should also be noted that these ceramics are very rare on the market, as is the case for most Apulian artists, and even more so for this type of vase, which belongs to the artist's earliest and oldest productions, a characteristic that makes it particularly rare and valuable.
Final considerations on the object:
The main feature of this vase is its evident handcrafted nature. The vase is not perfectly symmetrical, with the mouth slightly tilted to one side, something that can only happen with a vase that is entirely modeled by hand, without a mold. The bas-relief decorations are wonderful and very rich. They too are entirely handmade, applying beads or small tubes of ceramic paste to the main body of the vase, then worked with gouges, pliers, and spatulas to give the decoration its final shape. The vase was then glazed and fired a second time at 1300°-1400°, resulting in vitrification. Finally, the vase was treated with acid in the recesses to wear away the glaze and vitrification, giving it the effect of an ancient excavated vase, reminiscent of the ancient vases of Montelupo Fiorentino from the 1400s-1500s, which inspired this vase and many of the objects manufactured by Fantechi, with whom Vincenzo Corrente collaborated.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Vincenzo Leonardo Corrente was born in Grottaglie, in the province of Taranto, in 1887. At the end of the first decade of the 20th century, he moved to Florence and found work at the "Fantechi Ceramiche" ceramics factory in Sesto Fiorentino. In 1913, he founded his own factory for the production of artistic ceramics called "Aetruriae Ars." In the last photo, we have included biographical information about the artist with his mark, identical to the one under our vase, for those who wish to learn more.
