Item description:
Wonderful hard-paste porcelain figurine, polychrome and glazed, depicting a monkey, specifically a chimpanzee, entirely decorated by hand with an airbrush, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, signed with a large N under a crown in blue underglaze, one of the first marks used by Ernst Bohne, an important German sculptor who founded the Ernst Bohne & Sohne factory in 1854. The mark is the first and oldest used by the factory in the second half of the 19th century, when Ernst Bohne was still alive and working in the factory, a rare object and much more valuable than more recent pieces.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
A quick internet search shows that Ernst Bohne & Sohne porcelain animals are offered on the best online art and antiques sales sites at a minimum of €300-400 for the smallest, simplest, and youngest pieces, up to prices exceeding €1,500-2,000 for larger, more complex and older items, such as our little monkey.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Ernst Bohne & Sohne factory was founded in 1845 in Thuringia and is internationally renowned for the quality and beauty of its porcelain creations. In the last photo, we have included some historical notes on the manufacturer, taken from our French manual on European porcelain marks, including our own, which is the first and oldest. The manufacturer remained active until 1945, when it was definitively absorbed by Rudolstadt, another famous German manufacturer.
