This lovely, vintage, silk kimono with a mandarin collar makes for a stunning presentation in its archival shadow box. The box is constructed of walnut with a front panel of plexiglass to ensure the weight of the hanging is manageable. The archival process to prepare and frame the kimono cost $1,750.
The kimono is primarily royal blue with cream trim and an intricate, multi-colored, embroidered floral pattern. Hand-stitched frog closures are noted down the front of the kimono and slits are present on the sides. The trim was hand-stitched.
This kimono belonged to our maternal grandmother and we believe she acquired it in the 1950s (at least that’s when we see the first photographs of it). There is a small discolored area on the lower right trim. Given its color and location, we were advised by the archivist to maintain the garment as is. After storing the kimono for many years, we decided about 7 years ago to have it displayed in its archival shadow box so we could enjoy the kimono and the memories it invokes and have it enhance our home.
We’re very sad to have to let this kimono wall hanging go, but downsizing makes it a must.
