A fabulous sculpture depicting a German Shepherd dog, crafted from soft porcelain by the famous Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider in the early 1900s. The sculpture is attributed to the artist Otto Petri and bears his signature on the upper part of the white base, incised into the ceramic body (see photo). Under the base is the manufacturer's mark and the serial number, 4920. The sculptural quality of the animal is so high, in my opinion, that it almost seems real.
Useful information for appraising the item:
from our online research, we found that the top four highest prices achieved by Goldscheider range from €11,000 to €23,000 (with auction fees, the price exceeds €29,000), all for large Orientalist terracotta sculptures. Meanwhile, for Art Deco sculptures in soft glazed porcelain, prices range from a minimum of €1,000-1,200 to a maximum of €6,000-7,000. This gives an idea of the value of Goldscheider ceramics. Goldscheider's animal sculptures range from €200-300 for the smaller, simpler ones to over €3,000 for the larger ones.
Final thoughts on the item:
This German Shepherd, in particular, is truly extraordinary, in the classic posture this animal often assumes, alert and ready to respond to its owner's first command. Anyone who loves this breed absolutely can't miss out, and if you're a collector of porcelain animals, this will surely enrich your collection. Also not to be underestimated is the fact that the sculpture in question is in perfect condition, without the slightest chipping or fraying, nor any restoration or loss of color.
