The painting clearly displays characteristics linked to 17th-century Roman culture and, in particular, to the works of Gaspard Dughet, an artist who achieved astonishing results in depicting the Lazio countryside with unique grace and sensitivity.
Brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, whose pupil he was, Dughet is considered one of the most important landscape painters of the Roman Baroque, highly sought after and celebrated by the aristocracy, and a role model for artists of the following generation, such as Crescenzo Onofri, Jan Frans van Bloemen, and Andrea Locatelli. His independent production began in the fourth decade of the 1500s, when the artist, following Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, sought inspiration by exploring the Roman countryside (he lived for many years between Tivoli and Grottaferrata), studying its most evocative views, light effects, and lush vegetation.
The painting under consideration, of great scenic impact, is a fascinating example of his art: a realistic yet idealized view of the Roman countryside, interpreted with an Arcadian sensibility, where the gaze can delve into depth following a rigorous perspective sequence and the cadence of the treetop backdrops.
The landscape also serves as the backdrop for the biblical episode of the Archangel Raphael protecting and guiding the young boy Tobias. Over time, this iconography has taken on a broader meaning, eventually becoming an emblem of the human soul protected by its guardian angel.
The wooded patches executed with free, rapid brushstrokes, the warm, burnished colors, and the atmospheric rendering of rising clouds, all within a well-balanced composition of his Arcadian-pastoral landscapes, constitute the most significant elements of his painting, all beautifully reproduced in our canvas.
Some of his works are exhibited at the National Gallery in London and the Prado Museum.
The painting is in excellent condition and is presented in a beautiful gilded frame.
