Hand-carved in 12 pieces of French stone, this extremely large fireplace mantel dates to the early to mid-1600s, placing it in the period of Louis XIII. Architecture from the reign of Louis XIII was focused on ordered design, as noted by the multiple layers of molding that form the crown. The thick edges are comprised of several different types of molding, such as cavetto, quarter-round, and stepped.
In the center of the lintel is a shaped shield flanked by a pair of volute C-scrolls. The escutcheon is adorned with a chevron above a shallowly carved “1704”. Interestingly, the date “1766” can be seen faintly carved into the stone beneath the coat of arms, possibly indicating that some elements were added in the 18th century.
Taken from a chateau in La Meuse, France, the large mantel stands over six feet tall and six and a half feet wide. Three stones make up both the crown and the lintel, which are supported by two robust console-shaped legs, each consisting of three stones as well. The stones have a cream colored hue, allowing the Louis XIII mantel to be paired with any color palette.
*Please note that boards, shims, and metal shoring props were used to stabilize the dry-stacked stones. These are not necessary when properly installed.*
