Hand-carved from a massive piece of Burgundy limestone, this large wellhead has been finished a la boucharde, which is a sculpting technique that uses a diamond-point hammer to give the textured aesthetic seen on the stone. Dating to the 1800s, the limestone once covered an open well, helping to minimize the occurrence of someone falling into an open well. Remnants of the original iron overthrow can still be seen as metal protrusions rising from the top edge.
