A stunning bronze sculpture depicting the bust of a smiling young woman with gathered hair, signed "Fonderia Gemito Napoli" on one shoulder. The base is made of dark marble. The bronze casting is of high quality, resulting in a solid and compact appearance. The artistic quality of the sculpture is also remarkable; note the attention to detail on the woman's face, her hair gathered at the nape of her neck, held in place by a small wooden stick. It's truly a beautiful piece.
Useful information for appraising this item:
Vincenzo Gemito boasts numerous auction results, and our research shows that the top four results for his sculptures range from over €47,000 to over €101,000, excluding the 25-30% commission. This simply gives an idea of the importance and value of this sculptor's works. Then, we found our own sculpture, with a different marble base, sold for €2,000 (plus shipping costs of almost €2,500) at Finarte in Rome, at the auction on May 31, 2007, lot number 70, entitled "Girl with a Laughing Face." Our sculpture was made by the Gemito Foundry posthumously, that is, immediately after the artist's death, using the same original mold. with the permission of the heirs, a series of busts were created, usually signed in block capitals, not cursive. We are therefore approximately 1930-1935, and in fact, the patina on the sculpture is exactly consistent with this dating. This is the reason for our much lower asking price compared to the auction price.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, July 16, 1852 – Naples, March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor, draftsman, and goldsmith. Largely self-taught and unconcerned with academic standards, Gemito trained in the alleys of Naples' historic center and among the sculptures in the Archaeological Museum. Gemito's artistic production includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures, and a large number of sculptures, mostly in bronze, all depicting Neapolitan folk subjects or scenes. Numerous works have distinguished him and brought him international fame. This piece has an attribution mark,
