item :
a stunning, spectacular, and rare pair of ceramic sculptures, glazed stoneware, depicting a lion and a tiger, created by the famous ceramist guido cacciapuoti, originally from naples but now working in milan. Both are signed under the base, with a signature handwritten with a nib directly into the ceramic paste by the artist. One of the two also bears the inscription "made in italy," dating to the early decades of the 20th century, around 1927-1928.
useful information for valuing the item:
from our online research, we find that this artist's highest auction results range from €1,500 to €3,500, with a very high result of €22,800 (including fees) for a pair of angelfish on a large wooden base. Ours are in perfect condition, not even the slightest chip, and are a first edition, in patinated stoneware, crafted directly by the artist. These are unique and extremely rare pieces, of immense value. The fabulous patina, dating back almost a century, also testifies to this being a first edition and lends it a rare beauty. In the last photos, we've included the publication of the two sculptures in guido cacciapuoti's volume.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
guido cacciapuoti, born in naples on august 11, 1892, belongs to an ancient family of majolica makers, from whom he learned the secrets of ceramic art. A highly talented modeler, he gained recognition for his beautiful animal sculptures. In 1930, due to the premature death of his brother, he became sole owner of the company. The factory immediately enjoyed great success and became famous for the lifelike animal sculptures created by guido cacciapuoti, who died in 1953 and is now considered one of the most important italian ceramists of the first half of the 20th century.
