Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, born in the early 19th century in the Tōhoku region (northern Japan). They were originally made by woodworkers (kijiya) as toys for children in spa villages, but also as souvenirs given to visitors seeking relaxation in onsen (hot springs).
Over time, their use has evolved: from simple toys, they have become decorative and symbolic objects, representing protection, friendship, motherhood or even memory.
Each kokeshi is unique, hand-painted, and characterized by its cylindrical body without arms or legs and its expressive round head. Today, they are sought after by collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art. This piece has an attribution mark,
