During the 17th through 19th centuries, woodworkers in rural France would incorporate regional motifs into their furniture while still adhering to the prevailing styles set forth by Paris and Versailles. A beautiful example of this French Provincial style is our painted white oak armoire, hand-carved in Normandy, circa 1880. Highlighted by a carving of two lovebirds sitting on top of a wicker basket overflowing with flowers, the armoire has fantastic, deep carvings. The motif of lovebirds was typically reserved for a wedding dowry, indicating that this armoire was most likely given as a gift to a bride-to-be.
Above the birds is a thick crown with multiple moldings adorned with egg, dart, and leaf tips that significantly overhang the main body. A pair of floral margents graces the frieze, spanning across both of the rectangular doors that open to reveal a three-shelf interior that has a matching parcel white finish. The doors are well-carved, too, featuring a large leaf cluster at the top of each that extends beyond the frame. Additional motifs seen on the doors include flowering branches, margents, large bouquet medallions (typical of furniture from Normandy), and husked borders. Although the sides are very rectilinear, the front has subtle curves, as noted by the asymmetrical moldings of the doors and the sinuous apron that is embellished with a sunflower and drapery.
Although armoires were typically reserved for linen or clothing storage in bedrooms, they can be used wherever large case pieces are needed. Many homes have begun to incorporate armoires into living rooms, utilizing them as media centers for large, flat-screen TVs.
