Published in a small edition by Yves Riviere (Paris, France) 1988, this large folio coffee table book offers a fascinating look at the artistic technique of the Chinese American artist Walasse Ting. This hardcover monograph with dust jacket is superbly illustrated with color plates and plates. Most full page, some double page. The text is mostly in English with a 2 page essay in parallel English, Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Danish, Italian and Dutch.
In the spring of 1987, Walasse Ting spent 2 months in Amsterdam: day after day, he made drawings and took photographs of 68 young women recruited on the spot. Back in New York he painted on rice paper the works represented in this book This book shows the fascinating juxtaposition of the paintings and the photographs they are based on. Offering a valuable insight into the artists technique and vision. For instance, while all the models were european, the paintings depict them as asian. Most of the backgrounds, colors, and props were altered to create paintings that bare little resemblance to the photographs. Most of the paintings/photos are of nudes.
