An unusual earthenware pottery dish
A great and RARE example of the Mexican Folk Art produced in the renown ceramics center in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco
An oval, deeper plate "plato" or a bowl "cuenco", decorated by hand with white, green and blue slip against the terracotta colored grounds
It features a patriotic scene depicting the main symbol in the coat of arms of Mexico - the Golden Eagle
The majestic bird is perched on a cactus and it is devouring a snake. The drawing also depicts the island on the lake Texcoco, near Tenochtitlan where the story takes place.
According to Aztec legend, the Mexica people were wandering for years in search of a new home when they received a divine sign from Huitzilopochtli . They would know where to build their city once they see an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake.
In 1325, the Mexica arrived at Lake Texcoco where they saw just such a sight on a small island. Taking it as a sign, they built their city Tenochtitlan on that spot. Over the next 200 years, it would grow into a sprawling metropolis and the center of the powerful Aztec empire, nowadays a part of the historic canter of Mexico City
