The New York Times called Gorman "the Picasso of American Indian artists," and his graceful, monumental Navajo women are the heart of his work. This image is a fine example.

This piece is a Presentation Proof (annotated "Presentation Proof" at lower right), hand-signed by the artist and dated 1979 at lower left. It also bears the embossed R.C. Gorman chop mark.

The artwork is professionally framed in a beautifully hand-carved wood frame with floral and scrollwork detail that complements the subject perfectly. The mat has an attractive linen texture, enhancing the presentation.

The verso bears a gallery label from Indigo Gallery, Fort Collins, Colorado, indicating prior gallery provenance.

Gorman opened the Navajo Gallery in Taos in 1968, often cited as the first fine art gallery owned by a Native American artist. See less
