This exquisite Meiji period Japanese kodansu is a miniature lacquer cabinet showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and fine detail. The small cabinet features three drawers concealed behind a hinged door, with an all-over decorative motif of butterflies, rendered in the traditional Japanese inlay techniques of Raden, Hyomon, and Maki-e.
Raden involves the inlay of luminous mother-of-pearl, creating shimmering, iridescent effects.
Hyomon uses thin metal foil (often silver or gold) inlaid into the lacquer surface for metallic highlights.
Maki-e is a meticulous technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled over wet lacquer to form intricate raised designs.
The drawer fronts are adorned with a delicate geometric pattern inlay, each fitted with a tiny silver knob, matching the silver hinges and top handle.
A rare and finely crafted piece of Japanese lacquerware, perfect for collectors of miniatures, Meiji-era art, or traditional decorative techniques.
