Item :
A pair of hand-shaped terracotta plates, crafted on a wheel, with abstract geometric decorations, both signed by the artist "Maiolino." We obviously don't have expertise or certificates, but in our opinion, this is a work by the great Brazilian artist of Italian origins, specifically Calabria, Anna Maria Maiolino. The signature's handwriting is very similar to that used by the artist, who often signed with only her surname, as in this case.
Useful information for appraising this item:
Anna Maria Maiolino is a painter and sculptor who works extensively in terracotta. from our research, we've found that the four highest auction results found on Art Price in the "volume sculptures" category range from over €37,000 to over €100,000. Then we found a painting with the same signature as the one on our plates, sold by the Bolsa De Arte in São Paulo, Brazil, at auction on October 29, 2020, lot number 37, titled "Untitled (1986)," for almost €15,000, plus a 25-30% buyer's premium—the highest price the artist has ever achieved in the painting category.
(By Googling the information for the items we've listed, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language as ours, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or the name of the sales website, you'll most often be able to find and view the items mentioned.)
Final thoughts on the item:
Unfortunately, since we don't have any documentation certifying the authorship of these plates, we can't ask too much. However, the patina is consistent with the artist's age, who was born in 1942. These two plates date to around 1970. The style is certainly modern and abstract, likely one of his first artistic experiments, perhaps even during his years studying art in Venezuela. Please carefully examine all the photos of the two plates and make your own assessments, as I did when purchasing them. Note that the pair of plates is made of terracotta and entirely hand-molded. In fact, the two plates are similar, but not identical, as you can see from the photos. They aren't even perfectly round, precisely because they were hand-crafted. Therefore, these are two works of art, unique pieces. This piece has an attribution mark,
