This rare vintage kokeshi doll was created by the renowned artist Inosuke Kobayashi (小林稲之助), celebrated for his refined and original approach within the creative kokeshi style (sōsaku kokeshi). Born in 1931 in Gunma Prefecture, Kobayashi was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1979 for his contributions to this traditional art form.
Dimensions: height 20.5 cm, base diameter 3 cm.
This particular doll is an early work by Kobayashi and displays a restrained yet characterful appearance. It is decorated with a geometric pattern resembling a honeycomb, carefully hand-painted on the body and lower section. A striking detail is the orange fruit she holds close to her face – a fruit she appears to be eating. It may represent a persimmon (kaki) or mandarin, both beloved symbols in Japanese culture.
Her traditional hairstyle features a sleek, black-painted crown with a stylized topknot, lending her a classic and serene expression.
Over the years, this kokeshi has developed a warm, dark patina that enhances its unique character. It is in good vintage condition, with minimal signs of wear consistent with its age.
The doll is signed on the underside by the artist, confirming its provenance.
A rare and quietly expressive kokeshi, perfect for collectors of Japanese folk art or as an elegant, symbolic decorative piece.
Inosuke Kobayashi was most active during the 1950s–1970s and is admired for his understated yet thoughtful style, blending traditional Japanese forms with modern creativity. Early works like this one are hard to find and highly valued by connoisseurs. This piece has an attribution mark,
