Important set of three indochinese silk embroidered tapestries
tigers and axis deer – vietnam, colonial period, circa 1930
exceptional set of three hand-embroidered wall hangings, created in french indochina (tonkin region, present-day vietnam) around 1930.
these works showcase remarkable textile craftsmanship and an exquisite level of detail, typical of artisanal productions from the colonial era.
the set comprises a large central tapestry flanked by two narrower side panels.
the central scene vividly depicts a tiger chasing an axis deer through a lush landscape filled with bamboo, shrubs, and wooded hills. In the background, a bucolic scene illustrates rural life: farmers plowing a rice field with the help of an ox, with a traditional village visible on the horizon.
the embroideries, made of silk on cotton satin, display a rich palette of colors and an impressive refinement of detail. Each panel is bordered by elegant floral embroidered friezes, enhancing both the decorative appeal and stylistic unity of the set.
dimensions:
• central tapestry: h 186 cm x w 158 cm x d 4 cm
• side panels (x2): h 108 cm x w 40 cm x d 4 cm
condition:
in good overall condition. Some minor imperfections are visible in the photographs, consistent with the age of the pieces.
a rare item on the market, both for the quality of the embroidery and the uniqueness of its imagery, this ensemble represents a valuable testament to early 20th-century indochinese textile art.
