About the Collection (L'Estampe Moderne)
L'Estampe Moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by Parisian Imprimerie Champenois. Many accomplished European Art Nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only Original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by Charles Masson and H. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by Alphonse Mucha.
Each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist (this one being by Gustave Flaubert).

About the artist
Raoul André Ulmann was a French painter, born in Paris on May 28, 1867 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on June 28, 1941.
A student of William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, he painted Breton and Dutch seascapes, and views of Paris. from 1907, he exhibited landscapes at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He also exhibited with the Société Nouvelle de Peintres et de Sculpeurs de Paris, presided over after 1905 by Auguste Rodin, at salons in Paris and the United States (notably in Buffalo in November-December 1912).
During his lifetime, the French State acquired several of his works, which were allocated to the Musée du Luxembourg, the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne, the Chamber of Deputies, and the Élysée Palace. This print, Sadness on the Sea was published by L'Estampe moderne in 1898.
He received the Puvis de Chavannes Prize in 1931.
The Musée d'Orsay houses several of his works:
High Tide at Trébeurden;
The Seine at Trocadéro;
The Canal de la Bastille;
The Biez Meadow.

Le ciel était rose, la mer tranquille et la brise endormie. Pas une ride ne plissait la surface immobile de l'Océan sur lequel le soleil à son coucher versait sa lumière d'or. Bleuâtre vers les côtes seulement, et comme s'y évaporant dans la brume, partout ailleurs la mer était rouge et plus enflammée encore au fond de l'horizon, où s'étendait dans toute la longueur de la vue une grande ligne de pourpre. Le soleil n'avait plus ses rayons; ils étaient tombés de sa face et noyant leur lumière dans l'eau semblaient flotter sur elle. Il descendait en tirant à lui du ciel la teinte rose qu'il y avait mise, et à mesure qu'ils dégradaient ensemble, le bleu pâle de l'ombre s'avançait et se répandait sur toute la voûte; et quand à la place où il avait sombré, son reflet n'ondula plus, il sembla qu'une tristesse tout à coup était survenue sur la mer.
