About the Collection (L'Estampe Moderne)
L'Estampe Moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by Parisian Imprimerie Champenois. Many accomplished European Art Nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only Original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by Charles Masson and H. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by Alphonse Mucha.
Each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist (this one being by Léo Desmarais).

About the artist
Angelo Jank (1868 - 1940) was a German animal painter, illustrator and member of the Munich Secession.
He was the son of the German painter Christian Jank and specialised in scenes with horses and riders.
After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in 1888, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1891 to 1896 with Ludwig von Löfftz and Paul Hoecker and exhibited with several art societies at the Glaspalast. In 1898, he had his first showing with members of the Munich Secession.
from 1899 to 1907, he was a teacher at the Women's Academy of the Munich Artists' Association. He was then appointed a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, succeeding Wilhelm von Diez. In 1922, following the retirement of Heinrich von Zügel, Jank succeeded him as Professor of Animal Painting. Later, he was elected first Chairman of the "Association of Visual Artists" and presided over their exhibitions at the Glaspalast. For many years, he was also employed as an illustrator for the magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus, And he was also an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts, where his students included Karl Gatermann the Younger.
In addition to his canvases, he painted murals at the Justizpalast and scenes from history at the Reichstag building in Berlin. Among his best-known students were Louis Grell, Erma Bossi, Nina Arbore, Franz Xaver Stahl (also an animal painter), Henryk Gotlib, Käte Lassen, Carl Rabus and Adolf Ziegler. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1936 Summer Olympic

L'extraordinaire affection que témoignait cette femme à son perroquet m'était parfois un véritable sujet d'étonnement. J'avais cru découvrir à la longue que cette tendresse était surtout faite d'amour-propre : la femme se retrouve, se contemple, s'aime et s'admire dans le volatile de riche apparence, au chatoyant plumage. N'a-t-il pas, comme elle, une tête menue à mince cervelle terminée en petit bec dur et méchant; un œil mystérieux aux cruelles lueurs, des roulements de gorge câlins, une robe aux tons vifs et faux pour attirer facilement les regards, des ailes avec lesquelles il s'essaie inutilement à voler, et aussi - surtout! - cette étonnante, cette effroyable facilité à retenir toutes choses - qu'il ne comprend pas - et à les répéter longuement, stupidement, fréquemment, à contresens et hors de propos - pour s'amuser !
